Hand-Rendered & Digital Illustration

In response to an image-making brief, I developed these digital/analogue illustrations for Virginia Woolf's short story A Haunted House. The process involved hand-drawn base images set digitally atop photo or hand-rendered backgrounds and then manipulated to create mood, shadow, reflection, and detail. The images re-imagine Woolf's 19th Century English countryside into a contemporary beachside suburban surf town; I used a mix of visual references including public house rental images online, Google streetview, my own photography, and my current house interiors.

'A Haunted House', Virginia Woolf

"Whatever hour you woke there was a door shutting. From room to room they went, hand in hand, lifting here, opening there, making sure—a ghostly couple....'Now they’ve found it,' one would be certain, stopping the pencil on the margin. And then, tired of reading, one might rise and see for oneself, the house all empty, the doors standing open..." [from 'A Haunted House' by Virginia Woolf]
